March 10th

So Wife’s bonus arrived today, and we had a talk
You can go to Spain for Rock-tober or to New York
Didn’t want to let my sister down or see her weep
But I've chosen to go to the city that never sleeps
New York New York, here we come soon
Where Jay-Z raps and Ol’ blue eyes croons
I am so looking forward, I really can’t wait
Going to get drunk in New York, wow, what a State!
Looking forward to Central Park and all the young Americans
Maybe seeing some bands like Photon with Gillian
I’ve heard New York is just like a film set
I’m going to be a shark when I get off that jet
It’s where a Ghostbusters haunting did occur
It's where Leo Bloom became a producer
It’s where Kurt Russell tried to escape from
And Dustin as Tootsie was a convincing woman
Its where Three men had a baby to host
It’s where Whoopi spoke through Swayze’s Ghost
It’s where Sally fell for Harry and who could blame her
It’s where we got caught in a messy divorce with the Kramer’s
Requiem for a dream and other such epiphanies
It’s where Hannibal had his Breakfast at Tiffany’s
It’s where Gordon Gekko had his first and final
It’s where Tom and Marta played out their Vinyl
So New York here we come, my flag is unfurled
Get ready for the Odd couple and my own Funny Girl

March 9th

It came with a two year manufacture guarantee
As long as you empty the crumb tray regularly
After I’m done with removing the protective surroundings
I’m reading up on the uniform browning
It’s the epitome of domestic science
But don’t touch the top or sides of appliance
From the entire range this was chosen
It has buttons for reheat, cancel and frozen
I’ve read the instructions, so now, I’m the teacher
I own the ‘Bread carriage with high tilt feature
Do not use on an uneven surface
And only use for intended purpose
I went straight for it, that’s the way I roll
Played around with the browning control
Put down four slices directly from the freezer
Smoke alarm sounded, I nearly had seizure
Never tried cooking four slices at once before
My old two-er machine mocking me from the floor
There is a new toaster in town to take your place
But we will keep you as a spare just in case
It’s great for snacks anytime mostly
Even stale bread is nice when toasty
I think of my first toast experience now and then
But will never have to have Peckham toast again

March 8th

Day off so decided to dip into the think tank
Came up with ‘meet Tom for a bite on the Southbank’
Being a tourist we head to the Modern Tate
Then to The Swan at the Globe for a thespian lunch plate
Thought it might be busy so booked previously
Got to the front desk, they had never heard of me
After a few ums and errs and private f’s and Jeffs
We were seated and shown the specials from the chefs
A risotto for my belly and a red wine for my lips
But even in a posh gaff Tom still orders Burger and chips
But that wasn’t the most popular dish
That was held for the special Chips and Fish
I suppose it’s expected and what the tourists are taught
Although I do have a problem with the sign ‘Locally Caught’
An added twelve point five per cent on the bill, I see
The reason, a service charge for the convenience of me!
I work in the service trade and know how it’s meant
But adding a tip for me I find inconvenient
Instead of British fuming and getting uptight
I chose to act upon my statutory rights
‘I would like this removed’ I tell the waiter
‘Not a problem sir’, ‘Thank you and see you later’
So great to catch up with Tom, best of friends
I even carried his bag along the Thames
Said bye to Tom as of to the south by southwest festival he went
I headed home to give up things for lent
The knots in my mind once again undone
That’s the joy of living so close to London

March 7th

As we drive into work words of Lenny still inspiring
I thought of how well he had done and how much I admired him
A fantastic idea, a biographical show
Filling in the parts that others did not know
Of how and why he came to our attention
Of all the stories previously unmentioned
It’s got me thinking that maybe he’s right
You should listen to the music you love day and night
Music is strong it can trigger lost memories
‘Love is the drug’ and other such remedies
I look back now and music makes me remember
Of bright taxi lights and burning barbeque embers
Whenever I hear that song my mind responds
Pink Floyds ‘Shine on you crazy diamond’
Camping during the summer, memories held dear
With Uncle, Aunty and friends & ‘I wish you were here’
Different sights, sounds, smells and foods
Equal the first time I heard ‘All the young dudes’
Our lives are so busy, complex and confusing
It can all be relieved by musical interluding
So parents take heed from Lenny Henry
Dance everyday and sing with your family
Something else, quite profound, that Lenny said
Every day love your music or you might as well be dead
An interesting mantra to which I sort of agree
That’s why I’m dusting off my Kate bush LP

March 6th

Working in the morning but come the evening when we,
Went to Woking theatre to see Lenny Henry
He came on shaking, quite nervous at the start
Then he settled down and delivered from the heart
A biography on stage we were told of friend and foe
Of memories triggered by music, and a baby grand piano
Lenny took us on the rollercoaster that has been his life
Told us of Disco and Soul and differences with wife
The girls were all laughing and so were the guys
He could roll us in the aisle by simply rolling his eyes
He says without music he just feels odd
His whole life contained on one I-pod

March 5th

Wifey off all weekend but not me
Time together is somewhat of a luxury
Nice morning today. Got time to speak
Breakfast with syrup, must be the start of Pancake Week
Finally got around to watching ‘Inception’
Twisted my melon in every direction
Watched the film and extras and Spoiler Alert!
I couldn’t fall asleep as my brain still hurts
A fantastic film, a great start to the day
It’s nice that most of the crew were from the U.K
I really loved this film, but what does it mean
Must rest my eyes now, ‘To sleep perchance to dream?

March 4th

Up at five fifty am, radio is turned on
Absolute fan of the day, they are playing songs
Told ‘be around for six twenty’
Up for an hour but no phone call for me
Went back to sleep, listening still
But eyes close against my will
Pretty tired even after doing nothing
But at least I can breathe without huffing and puffing
When I woke up belly gave a call
Wanting tea, toast and own brand cereal
Got ready for work with a shower and a shave
Having to head back to the place I don’t crave
Lots of people leaving, it’s quite competitive
Due to it being monotonous and repetitive
Difficult to change everything, talking to a wall
Asking many questions, no answers at all
They have power, which is constantly used
We are the minions, downtrodden and abused
It may seem melodramatic that I go on this way
But you don’t have to go back every day
I like some of the people and don’t mind what I do
It’s just managed incorrectly with no getting through
It’s just how I feel; there is no end that I can see
Spoken to like a child, but I'm really thirty three!
