I’ve entered some poetry into a competition
To start the ball rolling on my inner ambition
I’m just glad that I’ve done something with it
Letting other people judge my ready wit
There is a plus side, I get to judge too
That is the only way that yours can go through
I’ll read other entries to see what I’m up against
To see who works with light and dark paints
I’ve already seen some on the ‘poetry generator’
Some make you interested and looking for more
Some are dark and hard to enjoy
I’ve opted for comedy, my laughter weapon deployed
I don’t care about winning as there are so many entries
People will be reading and judging my stuff
For now, for me, that is good enough
The first time strangers are rating my words
And although it maybe criticised by them poetry nerds
As having no depth and not taking it serious
At least they’ll have taken the time to be curious
I hope that they will stay objective
After all it’s all subjective
But with all words I’ll take them with some salt
I’m not a pro, I just writing down my thoughts
Whether good or bad and however you rate me
But just keep in mind, what have you written lately?

April 26th
Nothing of any note happened today
I have no tale to tell, no words to play
No drama played out directly before me
No miracles witnessed, no unbridled glee
No ladies with enormous hands and feet
No planned bulldozing of historic street
No dogs bullied or cats thrown in bins
No video released of celebrity sin
No affair caught out in seedy alleys
No band the bomb marches or burning bra rallies
No massive queues for buses or striking cabs
No protests against animal testing labs
No ticket inspector with strong vocal habits
No old grey lady paid for babysitting rabbits
No exclusive photo of a naughty M.P
No picture of a drunken flashing celebrity
No ‘Abigail’ from Derby with her chesticles out
No NHS foul up leading to an outbreak of gout
No Iain from Aldershot slagging off ‘The Man’
No nutter on EBay trying to sell his Gran
No psycho saying that the voices spoke
No lottery winner claiming to now be broke
No dynamic duo to save us from criminal capers
No news, good or bad, of note in the papers
Without this news, we still seemed to function
It’s like the news itself has taken out a super-injunction

A bank holiday of note, but only for me
A year since I wrote my first bit of poetry
I think it’s a year; well it’s a year at least
I first wrote last Easter, but it’s a movable feast
It’s all gone quiet both at home and at work
Back to back long weekends, the country is going berserk
People booked leave in their clever sneaky ways
They get eleven for the price three, cos of the Bank holidays
So about a year ago I wrote for the first time
This started my collection of good and bad rhymes
We are in week seventeen of the full fifty two
No sign of me stopping, I find it cathartic to do
I’m not sure what I’ll do or how it will finally look
I’ve written it down; I’ll cover it well and sell it as a book
So if in the future you’re reading this in paperback or on kindle
I will try to raise my rhyming game and hopefully not dwindle
Whoever you are reading this whenever it’s your turn
I am writing about what I’m writing about, which is a little post modern
Looking forward to the end of this week
When wedding partiness will defiantly hit its peak
It’ll be dancing and drinking a frightfully thrilling affair
Guest firing of wedding clichés without undue care
Meeting up with friends from the Island and beyond
Making more history, cementing further our bond
A day of fun for all with lots of love and pride
Why am I always the bridesmaid and never the special bride?

April 24th
Sunday came and another sunny one
Went to see the favourite child of my Mum
I was in my shorts but the youngest was happy
To run around the garden in just her nappy
A new addition was the soft play set
With rackets and balls and a multi-functional net
Told Nolan about the quest for my new book
He journeyed to ‘middle loft’ to have a look
A lovely chicken salad left us wanting more
Lovingly prepared by Lynn the day before
After kid’s bath and bedtime a hush descended our ears
TV and Easter eggs and ‘Nolan’s Music Dislike Years’

April 23rd
After Friday’s escapades doing nothing
Just yanging out and playing down my ying
Catching up with my online blog
Feeling my way through my minds fog
Football on later and updating online
Wife working until eight, so the day is mine
Got a call from Jo and then an invite we had
As long as we took along some salad
Had a relaxing bath and just sat chilling out
How do you wind down from doing nowt?
At my sister’s house you won’t get any peace
But I’ll get to play with my nephew and niece

April 22nd
Up in the morning after a little lie in
The Reading adventure about to begin
Want to find a wedding suit if I can
At least I’ll be the Best ‘dressed’ Man
Jump on the train and off to Reading
Basingstoke or Guildford first which way are we heading?
Decided it was much of a muchness, both the same
So to the Woking station to play the waiting game
In a vain attempt to save some dosh
We packed two drinks and some fruit to nosh
Didn’t want to shell out for lunch as had limited wad
So cooked breakfast using our new poach pod
Beans on toast with perfect poached eggs
And the sun was shining so out came the legs
Got to Reading and wandered to the town
Do we start at the bottom and go up or the top and go down?
Ended up trying most of the shops for men
Trying on suits, trousers and waistcoats again and again
Settle on the one I had initially like in Woking
With a waistcoat to stop my belly from outwardly poking
That was that, we headed back to the train
Reading is lovely, we will be back again
Wife didn’t get anything; she said that she would make do
So out come the ribbons buttons, tape and glue
I know it’s not in my direction that people will stare
But it’s always nice to have a new suit to wear

April 21st
Can’t wait to get this morning’s shift over with
Finish at work then three days to live
Three days to laze in the sun
Three days to eat hot cross buns
Time off with the Mrs makes me glad
Not every day, but two out of three ain’t bad
We both finished by four o’clock
Drove past the M25, bank holiday road block
All lanes are busy, the traffic starts to clog
It’s going to take three days to clear the back log
We had dinner but then couldn’t decide
Whether to stay in or go out for a ride
Ended up heading out to find a new pub
Where we can take the family out for some grub
The Cricketers on a green in Horsell
With a children’s play area out the back as well
It’s one to keep locked in the memory bank
For when we need to dredge the pub think tank
Trying to think where to buy a suit for the wedding
So tomorrow we are on our way to Reading
It has a lovely shopping centre and a grand food hall
So in our future I see a trip to the Oracle
We’ll see what it has and whether it fits
Or if I’ll have to breathe in a little bit
Some positive news too, we’ve just had some pay
It looks like it’s going to be a very Good Friday
